------------------------------------------------------------------

Lois & Clark: The New Adventure of Superman. 1993 - 1997

Act 1 Teaser

Two young men, Josh AND Zack, drive up to Smallville Co-Op in a large truck. Night. They park outside and Josh turns to Zack.

Josh : Let's do this.

They get out of the truck.

Cut to the inside of the market where the man who works there opens a safe behind the counter and puts in a money bag. The doors to the market open behind him, causing the welcome bell to ring.

Man : [Without turning around.] Be right with you.

He closes the safe and stands up. But when he turns around, he doesn't see anybody in the market.

Man : Hello?

He hears something to the side of the counter and walks over to see what it is. When he looks over the counter, he sees two dogs looking up at him, one gold and one black.

Man : Hey, fellas.

The black dog suddenly jumps onto the counter barking ferociously at the man. The man backs away, afraid. While the black dog keeps the man frozen in place, the gold dog runs behind the counter and grabs onto the handle of the safe with its mouth. It pulls until the door of the safe actually breaks off and clatters onto the floor. Then the dog grabs the money bag in its mouth and runs toward the exit.

The man grabs his shotgun from behind the counter and aims it at the gold dog, but the black dog attacks the man, biting the gun as if trying to pry it out of his hands. The man yells in fright and falls to the ground, holding onto the gun. The dog finally gets the gun away from him, biting it in half in the process, and the man gets to his feet and runs to the backroom of the store. He slides the heavy steel door shut, separating himself from the dog.

But the dog pounds on the door with its paws, putting large dents in the steel. The man backs toward the wall slowly as the dog continues to pound, finally beating an opening between the door and the wall wide enough to stick its nose and mouth through, growling angrily.

Then the dog pulls out and the man hears it running away. Seconds later, the man hears it running back toward the door, and with one final pound, the door falls to the floor. The dog growls at the man and runs toward him, jumping on him and attacking him. The man falls to the floor screaming.

Outside, Zack blows on his dog whistle.

The dog hears the sound from inside the store, where the boxes behind him are now spattered with blood. We hear the man groaning as the dog runs out of the store and out to the truck. Zack calls the dog toward him.

Zack : Hercules!

Zack touches Hercules's fur and finds blood there. He shows it to Josh.

Zack : What happened in there?

Josh : I don't know. Get him inside.

Zack opens the double doors at the back of the truck, revealing two dog cages side by side.

Zack : [To Hercules.] Load up!

Hercules jumps into one of the open cages and Zack pushes a button next to the cage that causes the cage door to close.

Zack : Where the hell's Einstein?

Josh : [Handing Zack another dog whistle.] Call him back.

Zack blows on the whistle.

Cut to Lois driving down the street as she talks on her cell phone. Over the phone, we hear Chloe's voicemail picking up.

Chloe's voice : Hey, this is Chloe. I'm not in right now, so leave a message and I'll get right back to you.

Lois : Hey, Chloe, it's Lo. I'm officially out of the dorm and on my way back to the Kents'. But I realized I'm still getting my mail at your place. Can you bring it by in the morning? Okay, thanks. Bye.

Lois hangs up the phone, taking her eyes off the road for a moment to put it down on the seat next to her. She looks at the road again just in time to see Einstein the gold dog run in front of her car.

Lois : Aah!

She slams on her breaks. Once the car is stopped, Lois turns around and sees the dog lying on the road behind her.

Lois : Oh, my God. What have I done?

She gets out of her car and jogs back to the motionless dog, kneeling down next to it. It whimpers softly.

Lois : Oh, my God. Okay. I didn't see you, okay? We're gonna get you out of here.

Lois picks up Einstein and carries him back to the car.

Lois : Okay. You're gonna be fine. I know you're gonna be fine. Everyone I've ever hit was all right.

She sneezes.

[Opening credits]

Act 1 Scene 1

Outside shot of the Kent farm. Night. Inside, Clark is asleep in jeans and a sweater, tangled up in a red blanket on the couch in the living room. He hears clattering coming from the kitchen and wakes up. He sits up just as Jonathan comes into the living room from the front stairs.

Jonathan : Shh. Clark stands up and follows Jonathan to the kitchen where they find Einstein who has spilled some food on the floor and is licking it up. He has a broken chain hanging from his neck. Lois enters.

Lois : Hey. I was just getting in. What are you guys doing?

Jonathan : We seem to have a visitor. A hungry visitor.

Lois : [Noticing Einstein.] Hey, he's supposed to be tied up in... the barn. I chained him to a post for a second so that I could get my stuff out of the car and well... [She clears her throat.] Yeah.

Einstein licks his lips and belches.

Cut to the barn. Lois, Clark, and Jonathan enter with Einstein. They see a broken support beam next to the stairs.

Lois : [Confused.] I had him chained right there. Okay, that's just bad wood. That's not my fault. How'd that post break?

Lois kneels down next to Einstein and sneezes.

Lois : Oh, my allergies...

Jonathan : Where did you say you found him?

Lois : Actually, I kind of... hit him.

Clark : You hit him? With your car?

Lois : [Sarcastic.] No, with my fist. I was gonna call the vet, but when I got in just now, he seemed fine.

Jonathan : I think you need to make some fliers in the morning. That way, maybe we can figure out who he belongs to. He's got a collar. I'm sure somebody's missing him.

Einstein whines.

Lois : Fine with me. [She sneezes.]

Clark : Actually, it might be fun to have a dog around.

Lois glares at Clark. He smiles back at her teasingly and leans down next to Einstein. He scratches the dog's face.

Clark : Maybe if we can't find out who owns him, we can keep him.

Jonathan : Why don't we just see what happens tomorrow, Clark?

Lois : Yeah, don't get too attached. I'm going to bed.

Lois leaves.

Jonathan : We should all get some sleep.

Clark : You know, I'm gonna do my chores.

Jonathan : It's three o'clock in the morning.

Clark : Dad, since Lois is staying here, if I'm gonna do my work at super speed, I have to do it when she's not looking.

Jonathan : [He nods.] All right, then why don't you start with that? [He points to the post.] Come on.

Jonathan smiles and leaves the barn. Clark goes to the post and pulls the remainder of it out of the ceiling. He takes the broken pieces and super speeds away, then super speeds back with a new piece of wood. He measures the space between the ceiling and the floor with a measuring tape, then with super speed he saws the wood into the appropriately sized pieces, puts the pieces together, and slams the beam in place. Einstein watches the whole thing.

When Clark is finished he turns to Einstein who licks his lips.

Clark : Well, at least I don't have to hide anything from you.

Einstein whines softly, looking slightly confused.

Act 1 Scene 2

Outside shot of the Kent Farm. Day. Chloe drives up to the farmhouse and parks her car outside the barn. Clark walks up to her car as she gets out.

Clark : Hey, Chloe.

Chloe : Hey. Lois, uh, had her mail forwarded to my apartment. Is she around?

Clark : Yeah, she's probably still in the, uh...

Einstein runs out of the barn toward Chloe with another broken chain hanging around his neck. Chloe kneels down to pet him excitedly.

Chloe : [To Einstein, giggling.] Hi!

Clark : ...shower.

Chloe : Who's the puppy?

Clark : We don't know his name. Lois found him.

Chloe : She's bringing home strays now, huh? [Chloe gets back to her feet.] How is the new tenant?

Clark : Lois? Well, she, uh, re-recorded our answering machine, uses all the hot water, oh, and she took over my bedroom. She's doing great.

Chloe : Okay. How are you?

Clark : I don't know. It's just kind of hard to be myself with her around.

Einstein whines and Chloe scratches his head.

Chloe : Yeah, but now you got this guy. You can be yourself around him, right?

Clark smiles.

Chloe : And I'm always around. [Clark doesn't respond. Chloe shivers.] Ooh, it's cold. I'm gonna go see if I can find her.

Clark : All right. I'll be right in.

Chloe : Okay.

Chloe goes toward the house. Clark picks up Einstein's chain.

Clark : Come on.

Clark leads Einstein to the tractor which is parked near Chloe's car and kneels down to tie the chain onto the tractor's grill.

Clark : We'll see if this'll hold you.

When Clark is finished, he pats Einstein on the back and walks away.

Clark : Good boy.

Clark walks toward the house and Einstein barks at him insistently.

Clark : Stay.

Einstein continues to bark. When Clark enters the house, he hears a rumbling coming from outside. He goes back out and sees that the tractor is now sitting in the middle of the front lawn, having just plowed through the fence. Einstein, still chained to the grill, sits in front of the tractor staring up at Clark innocently.

Clark : Holy...

Clark runs to Einstein and kneels down next to him.

Clark : Hey. Looks like you got a secret too. [He laughs.] Where are you from? [Einstein whines.] Good boy.

Clark scratches Einstein's neck playfully just under the collar. Then he feels something under the skin. He uses his X-ray vision to look into Einstein and sees a tiny microchip. Lois and Chloe come out of the house and stop when they see the tractor.

Lois : What did you do?

Clark : What? Oh, I, um... it must have rolled.

Lois : Through a fence?

Lois and Chloe come down the stairs.

Clark : Yeah, weird, huh?

Lois : Yeah.

Chloe : Yeah, weird. [Then, helping Clark cover.] But, I mean, it happens, you know? The emergency brake must've slipped or something. It's old, you know? It's an old tractor.

Clark : [Picking up the excuse.] It is old.

Lois looks at Clark and Chloe strangely.

Chloe : Anyway, I'm gonna get going. I'll see you guys around.

Lois : Bye.

Chloe leaves. Lois turns her strange look to Clark.

Clark : Just playing with Skippy here.

Lois : We're not gonna call him Skippy.

Clark : Okay, Lois, what would you like to call him?

Lois : Let's see. He's annoying, and I can't seem to get within ten feet of him without getting sick... I think we should call him Clarkie. [To Einstein.] Come here, Clarkie! Come here, boy! I made him some fliers. He can be somebody else's allergy now.

Clark : You know what? I don't think we're gonna have to use those. I found one of those microchip ID tags under his skin. I think they can scan it at the animal shelter.

Lois : I spent all morning on these.

Lois holds up the fliers she made. They have a color picture of Einstein and the flier says "Found dog."

Clark : I'll be right back. I have to tell my parents something.

Clark goes inside. Einstein looks up at Lois sadly.

Lois : Don't give me that look. [Einstein whines.] Clarkie.

Lois laughs at the name. Einstein lifts his paw to his face in a gesture of exasperation.

Act 1 Scene 3

Lois and Clark enter the animal shelter with Einstein. Day. Lois holds Einstein's chain.

Lois : We should probably get your mom a new pot roast while we're out. Sit, Clarkie.

The dog sits.

Lois : Good dog.

Clark rings the bell on the front desk and Zack comes in from the back room. When Einstein sees him, he lowers his head and growls softly. Zack recognizes Einstein. Einstein starts to bark at him.

Lois : [To Einstein.] Hey, shh.

Zack : Hi. How can I help you guys?

Clark : We found this dog.

Lois : Actually, uh, I found him. Well, hit him actually. [Zack looks at Einstein, concerned.] Not hard. We call him Clarkie.

Clark : [Annoyed.] We don't call him Clarkie.

Lois : Is it the "ie" part you don't like? Because we could always just make it Clark. But then that would get really confusing, and hey, maybe you should consider changing your name. You could be Skipper.

Clark : [To Zack.] Anyway, uh, we think he might have an ID chip. We were wondering if you could scan it for us. If it's not too much trouble.

Zack : Um, well, sure, I guess.

Zack picks up the scanner gun from the desk and bends over to scan Einstein's chip. Einstein barks at him. Zack backs away.

Zack : Whoa! Easy, boy.

Lois : Yeah. He doesn't seem to have a lot of love for you.

Clark : Maybe I should do that.

Clark takes the gun from Zack and scans Einstein's chip. Lois sneezes.

Zack : Bless you.

Lois : Thanks.

After Clark scans the chip, the word LuthorCorp appears on the computer screen at the desk.

Clark : LuthorCorp?

Lois : You're kidding.

Zack : Huh. It must be one of those lab dogs or something.

Clark : Lab dogs?

Zack : I'd be happy to take him off your hands and return him for you.

Clark : Actually, you know what? Um, that's okay. We'll take care of it. Thanks.

Clark and Lois start to leave. Zack wants to stop them, but isn't sure what to do.

Clark : Come on, boy. Come on.

Zack : I should probably get your name and address, though, in case someone from LuthorCorp calls. It's policy.

Clark : [To Lois.] Would you mind taking him back to the farm? I'm gonna go talk to Lex.

Lois : [Unenthused.] Terrific. [To Einstein, taking his chain.] Come on. Let's go sneeze a while. Heel, Clarkie.

Lois smiles as she leaves the shelter. A short look of annoyance crosses Clark's face as he goes back to the desk. Zack hands him a clipboard and pen to write down his address.

Clark : Thanks.

Clark begins to write.

Cut to the backroom of the animal shelter where Josh stands over a table. On the desk are several vials of green fluid. Josh is looking at some papers when Zack comes back.

Zack : Hey, Josh! Guess who just showed up? Einstein. [Josh looks at Zack, surprised.] Yeah. Some guy named Clark Kent's keeping him out on his farm.

Josh : [He laughs.] That's good news little brother. [He picks up a wooden stick and walks toward a cage.] ‘Cause I was thinking that we were gonna have to rob that truck tomorrow with just this dummy.

Hercules is in the cage, and Josh starts to rattle the stick through the bars, teasing him. Hercules barks frantically.

Zack : [Angry.] Why do you have to do that?

Josh : What do you care? It's just a dog.

Josh walks past Zack to the table and puts down the stick. He picks up a syringe gun and loads it with one of the vials of green fluid.

Zack : How's he doing, anyway?

Josh : He's got a couple hours left in him, long enough to help us get Einstein back. And then we can shoot them both up and get their strength back for tomorrow.

Zack : So how come you guys couldn't get the effect to last longer anyway?

Josh : [Threatening.] I don't know, Zack. I was just a trainer.

Zack nods. Josh laughs.

Josh : The plan's back on, little brother. Let's close up shop, huh?

Zack : Yeah sure.

Zack starts to clean up the papers on the desk. He closes an open binder and we see that it is labeled LuthorCorp Security Manual.

Fade to black.

Act 2 Scene 1

Genevieve Teague is escorted into Lex's study by a servant. Day. The servant leaves, and Genevieve walks to Lex who is standing in front of his desk.

Lex : Genevieve. What a surprise. If you're looking for Jason, I sent him to Metropolis on a business errand.

Genevieve : Actually, I came here to see you, Lex.

Lex : Oh, I didn't realize we had any more business to discuss. Drink?

Genevieve nods. Lex goes to the bar and pours two drinks. Genevieve takes off her coat and puts it down on the couch.

Genevieve : I take it my son has proven to be a good hire.

Lex : Excellent. He's taken a real passion for the project I've given him.

Genevieve : I gather this project does not require him to relocate out of Smallville.

Lex : Highly doubtful.

He hands the drink to Genevieve.

Genevieve : I underestimated you, Lex. [She drinks.]

Lex : Well, that's a common mistake. [He drinks.]

Genevieve : [Circling Lex slowly.] But not one I usually make. Seems that headstrong young men have become my blind spot. Ask Jason. And now you.

Lex : You asked me to give Jason a position at LuthorCorp. I'm not sure I understand your problem.

Genevieve : You know exactly why I wanted you to hire Jason. Get him away from Lana Lang. But instead, you decided to co-opt him for your own purposes.

Lex : Genevieve, paranoia is not a very attractive quality in a woman.

Genevieve : I'm just trying to protect my son.

Lex : Well, maybe you should get together with my father and write a parenting book. I bet it'd be a bestseller.

Lex goes to his desk and sits down.

Genevieve : Then you're no longer interested in how your father was released from prison?

Lex : I've chosen to believe my father truly is reformed. Therefore, the question of his guilt or innocence no longer bothers me. But it's great seeing you again, Genevieve.

She walks to the desk and puts down her drink.

Genevieve : And you too, Lex. Give my best to Jason. [She puts on her coat.] It's a shame he won't be able to help you find what you're looking for.

Genevieve looks back at Lex slyly for a moment. Lex looks back with a blank stare. She leaves. When she is gone, Lex pushes a button on the keyboard of his laptop which brings up the ancient map on his screen.

Act 2 Scene 2

Outside shot of the Kent farm. Night. Jonathan and Martha are preparing dinner in the kitchen. Einstein watches.

Martha : It's hard to believe he's as strong as Clark says he is. He certainly is a beautiful dog.

Einstein turns around and notices the meat already on the dining room table. He leaves the kitchen unnoticed.

Jonathan : Wait a minute, wait a minute. I know what you're thinking.

Martha : Well, it might be nice for Clark to have a dog. It's been kind of a lonely year for him.

Jonathan : Well, wait a minute. What happens when Clark goes off to college next year, huh? Who winds up having to take care of that dog? Me.

Martha : [Calling up the stairs.] Lois, it's time for dinner!

They hear a crash from the dining room and go out to see that Einstein has broken the dining room table in half and is eating the meat. Martha gasps.

Jonathan : Hey, hey, hey, hey! [To Martha.] You see?

Martha : Well, remember when Clark did that? He was only three.

Jonathan : It's not funny. [To Einstein.] Hey!

Jonathan goes to Einstein. Lois comes down the stairs and stands next to Martha as Jonathan fights with the dog.

Jonathan : Would you-- would you-- Hey!

Lois : [To Martha.] What happened?

Jonathan : That's my T-bone!

Martha shrugs, trying not to laugh.

Jonathan finally pries the steak from Einstein's mouth and nothing is left but the bone.

Jonathan : Oh, bad dog.

Act 2 Scene 3

Lex is about to start a game of pool when Clark enters the study. Night.

Lex : Clark. Grab a stick. I was just about to break.

Clark : Lex, is LuthorCorp doing experiments on dogs?

Lex : I'm not really sure that's any of your business.

Clark : Lois found a stray dog. It has a LuthorCorp ID tag. Are you?

Lex : Clark, when I took over the company, I found quite a few irregular experiments being conducted at my father's request. One of them involved animal testing.

Lex shoots the ball.

Clark : What were they doing?

Lex : If I remember correctly, they were mixing meteor rock with a steroid to enhance canine strength.

Clark : Why would your dad be interested in making super-powered dogs?

Lex : [Shooting again.] If I understood my father's insanity, Clark, I'd be a much happier man. But I suppose in this case, there were military applications. I guess I'll never really know for sure. The results were inconclusive. I had animal rights activists picketing the site so I closed it down. I was told the dogs were destroyed.

Clark : Evidently not all of them.

Lex : Is it exhibiting any problems?

Clark : [Suspiciously.] Is that your way of asking me if it has super strength?

Lex : No. No, I assume you'd tell me that because I'd have quite a liability on my hands if he did.

Clark : [He thinks about it.] The dog's perfectly healthy.

Lex : Well, then I'm sure the Kent farm will be a perfect home for him.

Clark nods.

Act 2 Scene 4

Outside shot of the Kent house. Night. Einstein lies nearby as Martha and Lois clean up the broken glass in the dining room.

Martha : Sorry about dinner. I guess it's just sandwiches tonight.

Einstein sits up as if he hears something.

Outside, Jonathan puts a bag of trash into the can, then walks toward the house. He stops when he hears a branch snap nearby. He looks around but doesn't see anything that could have made the noise. Then Hercules runs toward him and knocks him to the ground, biting on his arm. Jonathan screams.

Inside, Einstein immediately gets to his feet and starts running toward the door. Seconds later, Martha and Lois hear Jonathan scream.

Martha : Jonathan?

Einstein jumps through the window of the kitchen door, shattering it and landing on his feet outside. He runs to where Jonathan is still on the ground and bears his teeth growling at Hercules. Hercules steps away from Jonathan and growls back. Lois and Martha come outside.

Martha : Jonathan!

Jonathan : Stay back!

Martha : Jonathan! [Running toward him.] Oh, my God, Jonathan!

Jonathan : Stay back!

Martha picks up a piece of wood from the broken fence.

Jonathan : Martha!

Martha : [To Hercules, shaking the stick.] Get away!

Jonathan : [To Martha.] No!

Martha : Get away! Get away from him.

Jonathan : Get back.

Martha threatens Hercules with the stick.

Lois : Martha, don't!

Hercules barks angrily at Martha. Then Einstein growls at Hercules again. They have another growling match until Hercules hears a dog whistle blowing in the distance and runs away. Einstein runs after him. Martha goes to help Jonathan up.

Martha : [Breathless.] Sweetheart.

Lois : Are you all right?

Jonathan nods, but he groans as he holds his arm. Einstein comes back and looks at the three of them.

Martha : Lois, get the car keys. We have to take him to the hospital.

Lois runs back to the house.

Einstein hears another dog whistle and runs away.

Fade to black.

Act 3 Scene 1

We see Jonathan through the window of a hospital room at the Smallville Medical Center. Night. Jonathan's arm is in a sling and he is talking to a doctor. When he finishes, he comes out into the hallway where Clark, Martha, and Lois are waiting.

Clark : Dad, what'd they say?

Jonathan : Well, the doctor said he'd never seen a dog that could bite clean through bone before.

Martha : [Handing Jonathan a newspaper.] Look at this.

The headline says "Man Mauled in Bizarre Break-In."

Clark : The store owner's in a coma. He was attacked by something that could pulverize a steel door. Now, the police think it's a bear, but...

Jonathan : You think it was the dogs.

Clark : Someone's obviously controlling these dogs and using them.

Lois : Look, the only people that knew we had the dog were Lex and that guy at the animal shelter, and since the boy billionaire probably doesn't go around robbing convenience stores...

Clark : We should check it out.

Jonathan : Well, let's do that first thing in the morning, all right? Um, Clark, would you give me a hand signing out, would you?

Jonathan and Clark walk away from Martha and Lois.

Jonathan : Look, son, I know that you're really attached to this dog, but I'm worried he could be dangerous, even to you.

Clark : I know, that's why I have to find out who's doing this and stop them.

Jonathan : No, Clark, son, it won't make any difference. If they had anything to do with putting that man in a coma, then they're gonna have to be put down.

Clark : Dad, when you and mom found a super-powered boy in a cornfield, you didn't give up on me just because I might be dangerous. You raised me. You gave me a chance. He's a good dog, Dad. Someone's just using him to do bad things. We should give him a chance.

Act 3 Scene 2

Outside shot of the Talon. Night. It is closed. Jason and Genevieve sit inside talking.

Genevieve : I want you to leave here with me tonight.

Jason : Why? Because of Countess Marguerite Isobel Theroux?

Genevieve looks away.

Jason : You know that name, don't you?

Genevieve : Is this what Lex has you doing? Researching 17th century witches?

Jason : You're incapable of giving a straight answer, you know that? So apparently when Isobel was condemned to die, she vowed to rise again through one of her descendents. You knew that that was Lana, didn't you? That's why you had me bring her to Isobel's tomb in Paris because you knew that if she received the mark then she was the one. Which means it's-- it's my fault that everything's happening to her.

Genevieve puts her hand on Jason's.

Genevieve : You can't blame yourself.

Jason pulls away and stands up.

Jason : How could you use me like that?

He turns away. Genevieve walks toward him.

Genevieve : Look, it's not safe for you to stay here.

Jason : Well, I'm not leaving Lana.

Genevieve : Well, perhaps you'll change your mind when you hear the rest of the story. Isobel was condemned by a woman named Gertrude. Isobel vowed that when she rose from the dead, that she would wipe out all of Gertrude's heirs. We're Gertrude's ancestors, Jason.

Jason : So you think that Lana is going to kill you?

Genevieve : No. But Isobel will, and who knows when she'll return?

Jason : Mother, I walked out on Lana once before. I'm not gonna do it again.

Genevieve : Then you're in love with a girl that may kill our entire family.

Jason lowers his head in frustration. Unbeknownst to either of them, Lana is standing at the top of the stairs watching them. She goes into her apartment.

Act 3 Scene 3

Lois and Clark walk up outside the closed animal shelter. Day. There is a sign that says "No Trespassing, Private Property, Violators Will Be Prosecuted." Clark climbs over the chain link fence and Lois follows.

Lois : What is this an obstacle course?

While Lois is climbing the fence, Clark walks up to another gate that is locked with a padlock. Lois doesn't see him crush the lock in his hand and open the gate. When Lois lands on the ground, she looks down at what she has just landed in.

Lois : Oh, crap!

Clark smiles and goes inside. Lois scrapes her feet on the ground and follows. Inside, there are several dogs in cages.

Lois : You see him anywhere? Come here, Clarkie! Come here, boy!

There is no response, and Lois sneezes.

Lois : Wow. Could the dander get any thicker in here? You know, I've been thinking. Clarkie might've had something to do with what happened at that convenience store, but I don't think he hurt that guy. There wasn't any blood on him when I found him.

Clark : We're not gonna call him Clarkie, okay? We're gonna call him Bear or Bandit or something.

Lois : Uh, no and no.

Clark notices two employee lockers next to the wall and uses his X-ray vision to look inside one of them. He sees the LuthorCorp security manual. Again, while Lois is looking elsewhere, Clark breaks the combination lock off of the locker and opens it, pulling out the security manual and looking through it. Lois comes over to him.

Lois : What is all this?

Clark : It's LuthorCorp payroll. They're gonna hit an armored truck. [He looks at the clock on the wall.] And it's happening right now. Lois, call the police. I'm gonna see if I can catch up with these guys.

Clark takes a map from the binder and starts to leave.

Lois : Hold on there, Forrest Gump. What are you gonna do, run? We brought my car, remember?

Clark : Lois, look--

Lois : Unh-unh. We can call the cops on the way. You are so weird sometimes.

Lois takes the map and leads Clark to the car. Clark follows anxiously.

Cut to Clark and Lois driving down the road in Lois's car. Clark looks at the speedometer which says they are only going 36 miles per hour. He sighs.

Clark : You know, can you go a little bit faster?

Lois : Hey, you were gonna be hoofing it about ten minutes ago. Besides, I don't want to hit anything.

Clark looks at the map and then looks out the window.

Clark : It should be right here.

Lois : Well, it's not.

Clark uses his super hearing and hears a dog barking. Then he hears Josh's voice.

Josh : Let's go, let's go, come on! Get the money. Grab the money, come on!

Zack : Stop yelling at me. I dropped the bag, okay?

Clark : Wait, turn left, turn left.

Lois : Why?

Clark : Just do it!

Lois turns left on a small dirt road.

Lois : What is this, another one of your famous hunches, or are we just on a little scenic route here?

Clark : Okay, stop here.

Lois : Wha-- where?

Clark : Here ! Stop here!

Lois : Okay!

Lois stops the car and Clark gets out. Lois gets out and they look around. They hear Josh and Zack yelling over a nearby hill and they run over the hill.

Josh and Zack are taking money bags from an armored truck and putting it into their own truck. They are both wearing masks and they don't notice Clark and Lois.

Josh : Grab the bags, come on!

Zack : I am.

Josh : Come on, faster!

Zack : Those guys back there don't look so good.

Josh : Get the money. Let's go!

Clark and Lois hide behind stacked wooden crates and watch. They notice the two men who were driving the armored truck are lying on the ground unconscious. Zack and Josh finish taking the money and close the back of their own truck.

Clark : All right. Come on.

Clark and Lois run over the hill toward the truck after Zack and Josh are inside. They stand out of sight behind the truck.

Josh : Buckle up, little brother. Come on.

Clark : [To Lois.] Can you go see if you can help those guys?

Lois runs over to the two unconscious men. When she is gone, Clark opens the back of the truck and climbs in. He finds Einstein and Hercules locked in their cages. They both bark at him. The wall between the back of the truck and the cab prevent Josh and Zack from realizing that Clark has entered.

Clark : [To Einstein.] It's all right, buddy. We'll get you out of here.

Clark pushes one of the buttons, opening Einstein's cage. But on top of the cage are several more vials of the green fluid, and when the cage opens, the vials fall to the floor of the truck and shatter, weakening Clark. He falls back against the side of the truck with a gasp as Einstein leaves the truck. Einstein barks at Clark who is unable to move. The truck starts to drive away with Clark inside. Einstein runs after it.

Lois is kneeling next to the two men, and when she hears the truck driving away she stands up and looks around for Clark.

Lois : Clark?

As the glow of the green liquid fills the truck, Clark collapses, almost falling flat on his face. Einstein continues to chase the truck, running toward the open back door. But the truck takes a sharp curve in the road and the door slams shut.

Fade to black.

Act 4 Scene 1

Zack and Josh are still driving in their truck. Day. They turn into the driveway of their house and the truck stops. Clark is still weakened in the back and Hercules is barking at him.

Josh and Zack get out of the truck and hear Hercules.

Zack : What's he barking about?

Josh : I don't know, but in five minutes it won't matter. We burn the truck, the dogs, everything. All the evidence.

Zack : [Unbelieving.] What--

Josh : We're gonna be in the Keys before anyone knows we're gone.

They walk around to the back of the truck and Josh opens the door on the right. They see that Einstein's cage is empty.

Zack : Where's Einstein?

Josh : What the hell?

Josh pulls open the left door and they find Clark sitting next to Hercules' cage, barely conscious.

Zack : It's that guy from the animal shelter.

Josh : Well, well, well. Looks like someone has some explaining to do.

Cut to Einstein running through the woods toward Josh and Zack's house. He sees Zack moving money bags from the truck to a smaller car. Unseen, Einstein runs toward the house.

As Zack is transferring the money bags, Josh is covering the truck in gasoline. Einstein watches from behind the house.

Josh puts down his gas can inside the back of the truck and looks at Clark who is now locked in Einstein's cage.

Josh : Well, you just had to be a hero, didn't you? Sometimes heroes get burned.

As Zack walks up, Josh pours what is left of the gasoline inside the truck and drops the can. Josh walks away and Hercules whimpers at Zack. Clark merely looks at him, breathing heavily. Zack picks up some more money bags and catches up with Josh.

Zack : Are you sure about this?

Josh : He saw our faces. We can't let him walk.

Zack : This wasn't part of the plan.

Josh : The plan is working, okay? We got the money and we're almost out of here. [Putting a hand on Zack's shoulder.] You're not gonna chicken out on me now, are you? Huh?

Zack is quiet for a long time.

Zack : No.

Josh : [A small smile.] I didn't think so. Come on.

They walk toward the car and Einstein comes out of his hiding place and walks toward the truck. He stops for a moment to make sure that Zack and Josh have their backs turned, then runs to the truck and jumps inside. He goes to the cage Clark is in and barks at Clark. Then he turns around and sees the buttons to release the cages. He pushes a button with his nose and the door to Clark's cage opens. Clark collapses to the floor.

Einstein grabs Clark's jacket in his mouth and pulls him toward the door of the truck until Clark falls on the ground outside. Clark gets to his feet weakly and runs to the side of the truck, falling to the ground again. Einstein licks his face affectionately.

On the other side of the truck, Josh pulls a flare out of the trunk of his car and ignites it. Zack is at his side, watching the orange flame of the flare with awe.

Josh : Make a wish, little brother.

Josh throws the flare at the truck, igniting a fire on the truck's side. They hear Hercules howling from inside as the fire quickly spreads. Einstein sits outside the truck barking. Josh and Zack turn to go and Clark is suddenly standing in front of them.

Clark : Going somewhere?

He grabs them both by the jackets and throws them behind him against the side of the house.

Clark doesn't see Einstein jump through the flames and back into the truck, pushing the button to open Hercules's cage. Hercules jumps out of the truck. Just as Einstein is about to jump out, the flames rise, trapping him inside. Hercules turns to Clark and barks to get his attention.

Clark turns around and super speeds to the back of the truck. He sees Einstein trapped inside and super speeds in through the flames, picking up Einstein and jumping out. He super speeds away from the truck and kneels on the ground, covering Einstein with his body as the truck explodes, engulfing them in flames. When the flames die down, they are both unharmed. Clark sits down next to Einstein and Einstein licks his face. Clark laughs.

Fade to black.

Act 5 Scene 1

Clark and Einstein are in Clark's barn with a veterinarian, Dr. Klein. Day. Dr. Klein is listening to Einstein's heart with a stethoscope.

Klein : This guy's quite a hero from what I understand.

Clark : Yeah, I hope my dad lets me keep him. Doctor, you didn't notice anything unusual about any tests you ran on him, did you?

Klein : Like what?

Clark : Well, he just seems really strong sometimes and he likes to get into things.

Klein : Well, if anything, I'd say his strength is a little below average. You've got a perfectly normal, healthy dog here. You thought of a name yet?

Clark : I was thinking of calling him Krypto.

Lex arrives at the door.

Lex : Interesting name.

Klein : Well, I better be going.

Clark : Thanks, Dr. Klein.

Klein : You're welcome.

Dr. Klein leaves and Lex enters the barn.

Lex : Krypto. What does it mean?

Einstein growls softly at Lex.

Lex : Friendly.

Clark : It's because his background is so... cryptic.

Lex : Speaking of his background, I went out to the scene of the robbery and saw my armored truck. From the look of the back doors, I can only assume it was the handiwork of some very strong dogs.

Clark : Lex, you told me I could keep him back when you thought he was a failed experiment.

Lex : But Clark, if the experiment didn't fail, this dog could be dangerous.

Clark : But he's not dangerous now. He saved my life. I'll take my chances on his loyalty.

Lex looks at Clark doubtfully. Einstein licks Clark's face.

Act 5 Scene 2

In her apartment, Lana pours a cup of coffee for Chloe and one for herself. Day.

Chloe : So do you mind telling my why I was up until two in the morning researching Jason's family tree? I mean, not that it wasn't, you know, halfway interesting, it's just you definitely got your place in the Guinness Book of Strangest Last-Minute Requests.

They walk toward the living room.

Lana : I, uh, saw him downstairs talking to his mom. It was obviously a heated discussion, but uh... when he came up to the apartment, he didn't even mention it to me.

Chloe : Well, did you hear what they were talking about?

Lana : No. But it clearly rattled him. Chloe, he's keeping something from me. You know, I don't even know who I can trust anymore.

They sit down on the couch.

Lana : Did you find anything?

Chloe : Not much. [Chloe opens her file folder.] I mean, I can only go back as far as his mom's grandmother. After that, it's like someone just chopped off a part of his family tree. There's nothing there. I can tell you that she comes from a town called Castelnois de Montmiral. [She hands Lana a piece of paper from the file.] That's all I know. Well, except that...

She stops when she sees the look on Lana's face as she stares at the page.

Chloe : Lana, are you okay?

Lana : [Fearful.] Chloe, this is the town that my ancestors come from. And Isobel Theroux.

Chloe : Well, on a scale of weird to ten... Genevieve's grandmother is the one who moved Isobel's tomb into that church in Paris.

Lana : Why would anyone move a witch's tomb into a church?

Chloe : I think that's something you need to ask Jason.

Lana looks away from Chloe pensively.

Act 5 Scene 3

Jason enters Lex's study. Day. Lionel is seated on the couch reading the newspaper.

Lionel : If you're looking for my son, he's not here.

Jason puts a folder down on Lex's desk.

Jason : I'm just returning something.

Lionel : Yes, yes. How's the research coming?

Jason : I'm not sure I know what you mean.

Lionel : Yes, you do. I mean Isobel.

Jason is shocked into silence. Lionel finally looks up from his newspaper and chuckles.

Lionel : I understand your hesitation. When I found out that you'd been hired by my son, I put a few of the pieces together and saw a connection. You, um, you're Genevieve Teague's boy.

Lionel stands up and walks toward Jason, looking up him and down.

Lionel : Yes. Of course.

Lionel laughs softly again. Jason stares back at him nervously.

Lionel : You can't trust her, Jason. [Jason nods.] Of course, you can't trust my son either, but I think you know that.

Jason : And I suppose you're gonna tell me I can trust you, though.

Lionel picks up a manila envelope and hands it to Jason.

Jason : What's this?

Lionel : Open it.

Lionel goes back to the couch and sits down as Jason opens the envelope and pulls out a piece of paper. We see that it is the same ancient map that Lex has.

Lionel : [Without looking at Jason.] I think it might help you.

Act 5 Scene 4

Clark is fixing a support beam in the barn as Lois bathes Einstein in a steel tub. Day. Clark finishes.

Clark : Done.

Lois pours a bucket of water over Einstein.

Lois : Well, took you long enough. Now you just have to fix the dining room table, the window, the fence, and... [She sneezes.]

Clark smiles. Einstein jumps out of the tub and shakes off his fur, splashing water all over Lois. Clark's smile widens.

Lois : I thought bathing him was supposed to help with my allergies.

Clark : [Teasing.] Well, maybe you're allergic to the soap too.

Lois : Maybe I'm allergic to you. Can you grab me a towel please?

Clark tosses a bright red towel to Lois and she catches it.

Lois : Thanks.

She throws the towel over Einstein's back and starts to dry him off.

Lois : So, what are we gonna call him? And don't give me any of this Skipper crap.

Clark : I was thinking we could call him Krypto.

Lois : Why, because he's so cryptic like you? I don't think so.

Clark : Why not?

Lois : Because I think it's dumb. You can call your next dog Krypto. Look, it's not that hard. Max, Lucky, Rocky, Bailey, Scamp, Monty, Bud?

Clark doesn't really like any of the names. Jonathan and Martha enter.

Jonathan : Hey, you're gonna have to pick one of those if you want to keep him.

Martha smiles at Clark. Lois looks from Jonathan and Martha to Clark.

Clark : Really?

Martha kneels down and holds out her arms to Einstein.

Martha : Come on! Oh, hello!

Einstein walks to Martha with the red towel still draped over him like a cape. Jonathan and Martha both pet him.

Martha : You know, when I was a little girl, we had a dog that looked just like this one. Maybe that's why I liked him so much right away. His name was Shelby.

Lois : [Thinks about it.] I can live with that.

Clark : Well, it beats Clarkie.

Einstein shakes himself again, splashing Jonathan and Martha. Jonathan laughs and Martha shrieks with delight.

Clark grabs a Frisbee from the table.

Clark : Come on, Shelby! Let's go outside.

Shelby chases Clark outside and bites on the Frisbee. Clark pries it out of Shelby's mouth and tosses it across the yard. Shelby runs after the Frisbee and catches it in his mouth. Clark claps his hands.

Clark : Nice catch! [He kneels down.] Come on, boy!

Shelby runs back to Clark excitedly with the Frisbee in his mouth. He drops it and runs back to pick it up, then runs to Clark with it. Clark gives him a big hug and takes the Frisbee, preparing to throw it again.
