Act 1 Teaser

Lois and another waitress are working behind the bar of the Talon. Day. There is a huge crowd of young people standing at the bar waiting for their orders. Lois places a cup on the bar.

Lois : Double espresso, straight up!

She starts working on the next order.

Lois : Hello, everyone. It's like a free show of the girl trying to get all the coffees out. Okay, where's my waitress?

Lois doesn't realize that she is being watched by a young man, Kevin Grady, standing near the bar.

Lois : Who's next?

A customer hands her some money and she opens the register.

Lois : Oh, yes. $6.50, thank you. Okay, there's your change.

Lois starts preparing the next order and walks away from the register, leaving it open. Kevin takes the opportunity to walk behind the bar and grab some money from the register. Lois catches him.

Lois : Whoa! Hi. You did not just do that.

Kevin holds his hand in front of Lois's face with his palm facing her, and green bolts of energy shoot from his fingertips and hit Lois's forehead. When he takes his hand down, she smiles at him pleasantly, not remembering what just happened.

Lois : What can I get you?

Kevin : Uh, thanks, I've already been helped.

Lois : Great. Next?

Chloe and Clark enter the Talon.

Chloe : University of Miami?

Clark : Yeah.

Chloe : I just don't see you trading in your flannels for flip-flops.

Clark : Well, I figure if you've got a chance to start over, why not start over where there's a beach? I am feeling a bit guilty leaving my parents to run the farm without me.

Chloe : Yeah, I guess you would be really hard to replace with all your skills and everything.

Clark : Skills?

They arrive at the bar. Chloe speaks to Lois quickly to avoid explaining what she meant to Clark.

Chloe : Um, Lois, hey. Can I get a double cappuccino?

Lois : Yeah, just a sec.

Lois opens the cash register to put some money in, and sees that money has been taken.

Lois : Oh, my God. We've just been robbed.

Clark looks around and sees the back door of the Talon swinging shut where Kevin has just left.

Outside, Kevin runs through the alley to where his truck is parked and gets inside. He starts the car and his tires screech as he speeds away, looking around nervously. He slams on the brakes when he sees that Clark is standing in front the truck. Clark walks to the driver's side door and opens it. Kevin shoots the green energy at Clark's face with enough force to send Clark stumbling back against the side of the alley.

In Clark's mind, we see a series of memories tumbling over each other so fast that they are almost impossible to comprehend. Among them are images of his parents, Lex, Jason, the octagonal spaceship key, Shelby, Alicia, Chloe, Lionel, Lana's tattoo, Lana, Lois, Dr. Swann, and even Pete. The memories go backwards to the very beginning, covering everything that has happened to Clark with his spaceship, red kryptonite, the tornado that almost killed Lana, Clark being struck by lightning, and being strung up in the cornfield with the kryptonite necklace on. There is a flash of being hit by Lex's car on the bridge, then Jonathan and Martha upside down in their car after the meteor shower, the meteors floating through space on their way to Earth, and then baby Kal-El being placed into a spaceship.

The next thing Clark sees is Chloe leaning over him in the alley of the Talon in the present day

Chloe : Clark? Clark? [She kneels down.] What happened?

Clark : Who's Clark?

Chloe stares at him nervously.

[Opening credits]

Act 1 Scene 1

Outside shot of the Kent farm. Day. Chloe and Clark drive up outside in Chloe's car. They park next to the house and Clark rolls down his window to look around. Then they get out of the car. Clark looks apprehensive, like he doesn't know where he is. They walk toward the house.

Chloe : It must be kind of weird seeing the house you grew up in for the first time. Do you recognize anything? I mean, the house or the cows... the tractor, anything?

Clark : You sure this is where I live?

Chloe : Yeah. Um, you spend most of your time over there.

Chloe points to the loft.

Clark : [Doubtful.] In a barn?

Chloe : Well, normal was never really your style, Clark.

Clark looks at her, uncomprehending.

Chloe : That was my attempt at humor. Sometimes I crash and burn. Sorry.

Clark turns to the house and walks up the stairs. Chloe follows. Clark raises his hand to knock on the door, but Chloe stops him.

Chloe : Clark, it's your house.

Clark : Right.

Clark tries the knob and the door doesn't open. He gives it another pull and tears the door completely off its hinges, sending it flying onto the front lawn.

Clark : [Shocked.] I-It was stuck.

Chloe : [Calm.] Actually, I think it was locked.

Chloe smiles and passes Clark, entering the house. Clark follows her and looks at a picture of himself and his parents on the fridge.

Chloe : [Looking around.] Mr. Kent? Mrs. Kent?

No response. Lois enters.

Lois : What the hell happened to the door?

Clark : You know, I tried to open it, and then-

Chloe : [Cutting him off.] Yeah, and then some freak wind came and just blew it right off.

Clark doesn't understand, but he doesn't say anything more.

Lois : Right.

Chloe : So, Lois, do you know where the Kents are?

Lois : They're in Metropolis for Mr. Kent's heart exam. Clark, you know that.

Chloe : Well, not so much. He has amnesia, and he's having a hard time-

Lois : Again?

Clark : What do you mean again?

Lois walks up to Clark smiling.

Lois : Well, at least this time you got clothes on.

Chloe : Lois, we need to get his parents back home.

Lois : Well, that's gonna be a little hard. Mr. Kent has a one-way ticket on the Ambien express. He's gonna be out of commission for a couple of days. So what happened?

Clark : Well, the last thing I remember, I woke up in the alley. I was with, uh...

He looks at Chloe, unable to remember her name.

Chloe : Chloe. [To Lois.] I'm thinking he caught up to whoever was behind the "robbery in plain sight" incident.

Lois : And what, we have a thief with memory repo? [Chloe shrugs.] I guess that could explain why in some weird Smallvillean way how I zoned out eight coffee orders before I found the till was empty.

Chloe : [She nods.] I'm gonna go to the Torch and see what I can find out about amnesia.

Lois : Yeah, just leave Mr. Memory Reboot to me. I'm getting to be a pro at this. [To Clark.] But you know what? You're gonna have to put up with PB and J because that's the extent of my culinary skills.

Chloe : [To Clark.] Okay?

She starts to leave.

Clark : Uh, please tell me I'm not related to her.

Chloe : No, I am. You live with her.

Lois : Clark.

Clark turns to Lois and she tosses him a jar of peanut butter. He is about to open it, but Chloe takes it away from him quickly, afraid that he might accidentally break it.

Chloe : Uh... you know what? [She puts the jar down.] I'm gonna take him up to the barn, see if anything up there jogs his memory.

Lois : All right. Suit yourself.

Chloe : [Quietly to Clark.] We need to talk.

Act 1 Scene 2

Outside shot of the Talon. Day. Lana enters her apartment where Jason is waiting for her grinning.

Lana : What's with the Cheshire cat routine?

Jason holds up a thick envelope.

Jason : A little something from Central Kansas. Congratulations. I think if they were gonna reject you, they probably wouldn't have sent a novella.

Lana : [Less enthused than Jason.] No, probably not.

Jason : Hey, I was thinking that we could go check out the dorms on campus this weekend.

Lana : Jason, I'm not sure that I'm gonna go to Central Kansas. I'm not even sure if I'm gonna go to college at all. I've actually given this a lot of thought.

Jason : Which part? The part that we've been planning this for an entire year? Lana, I thought this was our one chance to put everything that's happened over the past couple months behind us. It would be like Paris all over again.

Lana : How? Jason, last summer was incredible. But we have to face it. We haven't been able to recreate that here, not with everything that's happened. Not with the stones or your mom and all of the lies.

Jason : How long have you known? [Becoming angry.] I mean, your feelings don't just change overnight, so you've obviously been thinking about this a while.

Lana : Yeah.

Jason : Yeah.

Lana : Ever since this turned into the same relationship I was trying to leave behind when I went to Paris.

Jason : Oh, so this is about Clark.

Lana : No, it's not about Clark. Jason, it's about us. There are too many secrets. I kept wishing that we could wipe the slate clean, but we can't. A chance like that... maybe it only comes around once in a lifetime.

Lana turns away from Jason and walks into the living room. He follows her and grabs her arm, turning her around roughly.

Jason : You were the one part of my life that made me forget what I've turned into.

Lana : [Frightened.] What are you talking about?

Jason : Just don't give up on me.

Lana : Jason...

Jason : Okay? You have no idea how much I've been protecting you. Do you?

Jason lets her go and storms out of the apartment.

Act 1 Scene 3

Clark is standing near the tractor outside the barn. Day. Chloe walks up to him with a crowbar which she hands to him.

Chloe : Here. Bend this.

Clark : This is metal. I can't bend this.

Chloe sits down on a stack of hay bales.

Chloe : Just like you can't pull a door off its hinges, right? Try it.

Clark holds the bar in front of his face with both hands, then bends it into a circle easily.

Clark : [Surprised.] How did I do that?

Chloe : Why did I always picture myself on the other end of this conversation? Um, here, come here. Sit.

Clark sits on the hay next to her.

Chloe : Smallville was hit with the world's biggest meteor shower when you were little. Now, I know this sounds way out there, but some of the meteor rocks have had an extraterrestrial effect on certain people in the town, and it's my theory that you were one of them.

Clark : Extraterrestrial powers? You mean I'm some sort of alien?

Chloe : No. No, of course not.

Clark : A mutant?

Chloe : Uh... yeah...who has saved my life on more than one occasion. See, you've sort of taken it upon yourself to be Smallville's self-appointed hero. And if you ask me, I think that that is amazing.

Clark looks at Chloe with an overwhelmed expression. He takes a breath and stands up, still holding the bent crowbar.

Clark : We must've been pretty good friends if I trusted you with all this.

Chloe : [Standing up.] Yeah, well, actually you didn't. It's okay. I mean, you were just protecting yourself. A lot of people would betray you if they knew.

Clark : [More a statement than a question.] But you wouldn't. Would you?

Chloe : Never.

Act 1 Scene 4

Outside shot of the Talon. Night. Inside, Clark and Chloe are retracing the robbery. The Talon is closed.

Chloe : So Lois said that she was standing right here the whole time.

Clark : I don't know why we just don't call the police.

Chloe : The same reason why I didn't just take you to the hospital. Clark, the last thing we want is to get you on the radar of Smallville's friendliest authorities. Now, can you see if you can find anything?

Clark starts to look around. He accidentally slips into X-ray vision and looks through the counter, seeing a card on the floor behind the bar.

Clark : Chloe. Is there something there? Back behind the-near your feet. Under the mat.

Chloe bends over and picks up the card.

Chloe : Okay, how'd you know that was there?

Clark : [Scared.] Well, I-I could-I-I guess... I-I can see through things.

Chloe pulls her jacket closed.

Chloe : Hold on a minute, are you telling me that you can see through solid objects?

Clark : I guess that's one you didn't know about, huh?

Chloe : No, uh, and, uh, that might be one of those abilities you're gonna want to keep a lid on.

Clark : You know, I've been thinking about that. You know, I don't know why I was worried so much about what people think. I don't know why I let it rule my life. I mean, you understood.

Chloe : Yeah, but Clark, unfortunately, some people in Smallville aren't as progressive as your post-amnesia tour guide.

Clark : That should be their problem, not mine.

Chloe : Look, I understand how eager you are to throw an impromptu coming out party. I mean, I've only spent the last couple of hours blocking for the man behind the mask and it's not as easy as I thought it would be. But, please, just sleep on it.

Clark : I know, it's just... I mean, how can anyone ever get to know me if I'm never myself?

Chloe : I know it's hard. But I imagine that if you didn't tell people, you must've had a lifetime of reasons for not doing it. That's why we need to get your memory back.

Clark : So I can do what, get back to lying to everyone?

Chloe : Clark-

Clark : Chloe, I'm not sure I want that life back.

Chloe : At least wait until you can talk to your parents, okay?

Clark looks away from Chloe, frustrated. He notices Lana coming down the stairs and is instantly enchanted with her. Chloe doesn't know what he is looking at.

Chloe : Clark? Clark?

Clark walks slowly in Lana's direction. She doesn't see him and walks toward the front door of the Talon smiling at a waitress who brings in some fresh flowers. Clark blinks heavily as if something is caught in his eye, then he inadvertently shoots several bolts of heat vision at a nearby lampshade which catches on fire. Chloe runs over to the lamp and drops a glass of water on it, putting out the fire.

Chloe : Aah! Premature combustion. That's one I didn't need to know about.

Clark continues to stare at Lana.

Clark : Who is that?

Chloe : That... is Lana Lang.

Clark's smile grows. Lana walks toward the front door, still not realizing that Clark and Chloe are watching her.

Chloe : The love of your life.

Clark gazes at the door. Chloe looks at Clark.

Fade to black.

Act 2 Scene 1

Outside shot of the loft. Night. Inside, Clark is seated on the couch looking at some pictures of Lana. He puts those aside and picks up some drawings that he made of the Kawatche caves and the symbols he found there. When he doesn't recognize any of them, he throws them down in frustration. Lois enters, seeing this.

Lois : Looks like one more thing you don't remember. You usually hide all those emotions. I came to ask if you were doing okay. But it looks like I got my answer.

She pulls up a chair and sits near the couch.

Clark : My life is a complete void. How would you feel?

Lois : Oh, pity party. These are fun.

Clark : Look, Chloe's very protective of me. I guess there's a lot of people that I can't trust.

Lois : And you can't tell who they are. Look, you may not remember all the players on the board, but you can still play the game.

Clark : Are you gonna tell me how I'm supposed to do that?

Lois : Trust your gut. Like, what's it say about me?

Clark : [He smiles.] We don't like each other very much.

Lois : [Nods.] You're on the right track. Keep it up, Smallville.

Lois leaves. Clark picks up another picture of Lana and stares at it thoughtfully.

Act 2 Scene 2

Clark walks through the hallway at Smallville High School. Day. He stops when he sees Lana standing next to her open locker. She puts on her jacket, getting ready to leave. Clark goes to her.

Lana : Hi, Clark.

Clark : Hi.

Lana : I heard about what happened to you. Oh, I'm sorry. I suppose you don't even know who I am.

Clark : Lana.

Lana is stopped mid-thought as Clark stares at her, unable to mask his feelings for her. Lana stares back for a moment, deeply affected by Clark's vulnerability.

Lana : [Slowly.] I was, uh, gonna come by later. I didn't think I'd see you here.

Clark : I actually came here to see you. Chloe, she... she told me that we used to, uh...

Lana : Yeah. Yeah, we did.

Clark : What happened? [Lana can't answer.] Please, I just... I'd really like to know.

Lana : So would I.

Clark : [Disbelief.] It was me?

Lana lowers her eyes. Clark looks heartbroken.

Clark : I don't understand. I... If I felt anywhere near like I feel now...

Lana is about to speak.

Clark : You know, don't tell me. I don't want to know. I don't want to know because this time, it'll be different.

Lana : [Near tears.] This time?

A locker door slams shut behind Lana, startling her and pulling her out of the moment.

Lana : Um, I don't think we should talk about this right now.

Clark : When can we talk about this?

Chloe and Lois enter the hallway and see Clark and Lana talking.

Lois : How did he get here?

Chloe : Looks like the heart remembers more than the brain.

They watch Lana walk away from Clark quickly. He turns and watches her go.

Lois : Come on, cuz. Don't give one more second's thought to those vacant baby blues.

They walk over to Clark.

Chloe : Hey, good news. Uh, we traced that day pass you found to Grand View Motor Cross Park. It belongs to a guy named Kevin Grady.

Lois : He lives in Smallville, so we thought we'd go check out the address. Coming?

Act 2 Scene 3

Kevin is in the kitchen of his house holding his backpack. Day. He takes a framed picture from a table and looks at it, then puts it into his bag. Then he opens a drawer and takes out several food items, stuffing them in as well. His father, Mr. Grady, comes into the room.

Grady : Kevin? What are you doing here?

Kevin : Look, I'm sorry, Dad. But I couldn't stay there any longer.

Grady : Kevin, you have to go back. You're in the middle of your treatment.

Kevin : It's not working. Look, I know you want to keep what I did to Dylan a secret, but no matter what they do to try to make me forget it, I'll always know the truth.

Grady : Kev-

Kevin : Don't worry about me, okay? I've got money together. I'll be fine. After what I did, I can't expect you to look at me every day.

Grady : Kevin, please let us help you.

Kevin : You can't. That place turned me into some kind of freak.

Grady : What do you mean?

Kevin : This.

Kevin shoots the green energy at Mr. Grady's face. The next thing Mr. Grady is aware of is standing alone in the kitchen. The doorbell rings. He answers it. It is Lois and Clark. Chloe can be seen in the background looking at the Mr. Grady's car.

Grady : Yes?

Lois : Hi. I'm here to collect on a little spontaneous line of credit your son decided to take out with the Talon, along with two minutes of my memory.

Grady : Uh, you must be mistaken.

Clark : Well, actually, Mr. Grady, we found this by the register at the Talon. [Clark holds up the day pass.] It's Kevin's. We just want to talk to him.

Grady : I'm afraid that's not possible. My son is out of town at the moment.

Chloe walks up to the porch.

Chloe : And by out of town, I'm guessing you're meaning undergoing some kind of treatment at Summerholt Institute. I'm sorry, I couldn't help but notice the parking pass on your windshield.

Grady : I believe that's nobody's business but ours. Excuse me.

Clark : Look, we're not saying he did it. We just need to find out what he knows.

Mr. Grady stares at them for a long moment.

Grady : All right. Yes, my son is a patient at Summerholt. Last fall, I took both my boys hunting at Audrey Clearing. There was an accident. Kevin was loading his gun, and, uh, I lost my son Dylan. [He becomes emotional.]

Clark : Mr. Grady, I'm sorry.

Grady : Kevin couldn't live with himself. He was uh... And I didn't know which way to turn, so I... Well, we thought that if Summerholt could help erase those memories, well, then maybe Kevin could get on with his life. Excuse me. Uh, I need to try and find my son. Thank you.

He goes inside and closes the door.

Lois : Look, it tugs at the heartstrings, but I'm not sure I totally buy it. I'm gonna go have a look around.

Lois walks away. Clark gets a strange look on his face as his super hearing kicks in.

Chloe : Clark, are you okay?

Clark : I can hear someone running.

Chloe : What? And the super Wheaties abilities just keep coming. Where are they?

Clark : They're on the side of the house.

Chloe : Well, go get them.

Clark : It sounds like he's on a motorcycle now.

They both hear the motorcycle engine starting and see Kevin speeding away in the distance.

Chloe : Trust me on this one, Clark. Run.

Clark : Chloe-

Chloe : Just run, Clark!

Clark runs after Kevin and almost immediately goes into super speed. We see him catch up to Kevin in slow motion, then keep running past him, unsure of how to stop. Clark finally does stop in a field next to several grazing cows.

Fade to black.

Act 3 Scene 1

Outside shot of Lex's mansion. Day. Clark and Chloe enter the study. Clark looks around in awe.

Clark : I guess the whole castle thing didn't take off in the neighborhood? I can't believe I'm with a billionaire.

Lex enters and walks over to them.

Lex : Funny, you never seemed that impressed before.

Clark : [Formally, intimidated.] Mr. Luthor.

Lex : [Correcting him.] Lex. I'm guessing you don't remember it, but we kind of dropped the formalities the day I ran you off a bridge.

Chloe : Look, as much as I'm sure we're all enjoying this little ice breaker, we did come here for a reason. I was hoping that you still had your contact at Summerholt Institute.

Clark : Chloe mentioned that they had done some experiments on you.

Chloe : Yeah, we were guessing that the guy that did this to Clark is undergoing some sort of treatment to have his memory wiped.

Lex : Probably not too far of a leap given their unnerving advancements in the field. Look, I'll make a few calls and see what I can find.

Chloe and Clark start to leave.

Lex : Chloe, if you don't mind, uh, I'd like to have a word with Clark.

Chloe : [Unsure.] Well, I promised his parents I would get him home.

Lex : Well, I think I can manage that.

Clark : It's all right, Chloe. You could use a break from chaperone duty. I'll be okay.

Chloe looks at Lex nervously and he at her innocently.

Chloe : Okay.

She leaves the study uneasily. When she gets to the door, she whispers under her breath.

Chloe : Clark.

Clark turns his head slightly, hearing her with his super hearing.

Chloe : Be careful.

She exits.

Lex : Clark, I think I might know something that could jog your memory.

Act 3 Scene 2

Clark and Lex enter the Kawatche caves carrying flashlights. Day.

Clark : I found these caves?

Lex : And ever since, the two of us have been working together, trying to solve its mysteries. That's just between you and me.

Clark : What do all these symbols mean?

Lex : I know it'll probably sounds strange, but we think they're about you.

Clark : [Turning to the wall.] Wait. There should be a two-headed monster over here.

Clark shines his light on the cave wall and finds the painting of the monster.

Lex : Then you remember this place.

Clark : No, I recognize it from the drawings in the loft.

Lex : [Lying.] We were, uh, documenting them.

Clark shines his flashlight on the crack in the wall that is the door to the hidden chamber.

Clark : Wait. This wall shouldn't be here.

Lex : What do you mean?

Clark : Well, in the drawings, it shows a room behind this wall.

Lex : [Working to stay calm.] Clark, maybe we should head back to the loft and take a closer look at the pictures. I can help explain them to you.

Clark looks at Lex for a moment as if gauging whether or not he can trust him.

Clark : No, I should probably get back. I don't want my parents to worry.

Lex : Of course.

Clark leaves Lex alone in the cave.

Act 3 Scene 3

Outside shot of Summerholt Institute. Day. Chloe enters the building and walks down an empty hallway looking at names on the doors that she passes. A door begins to open and she scurries around the corner and out of site as a man and woman come out of the room and walk away from where Chloe is standing. They are both holding clipboards and talking softly.

Chloe continues down the hallway and ends up in a records room with shelves full of notebooks and data CDs. She seats herself at a computer and looks through the CDs on the desk. She picks one of them and puts it into the disk drive. A box comes up with a list of items on the CD, the top item being "Kevin Grady's Treatment."

She opens a dialogue box where she types her e-mail address and drags the files from the CD into the box. Then she pulls out her cell phone and dials a number.

Lois : [Through the phone.] Hello?

Chloe : Lois?

Lois : Hey, Chloe. You there?

Chloe : Yeah. Incoming. Check my e-mail.

Lois : Got it.

Chloe hangs up the phone. Suddenly someone walks up behind her and clamps a hand around her mouth. She gasps.

Act 3 Scene 4

Clark enters the Torch office. Day.

Clark : Chloe, I-

He stops when he sees Lois seated at Chloe's desk.

Clark : Lois.

Lois : Clark, you've got to look at this. Chloe called and told me to download some files she e-mailed from Summerholt.

Clark walks to the computer.

Clark : How'd she get in?

Lois : I've learned never to underestimate Chloe, especially when it comes to helping you.

Lois plays a video on the computer. We see Kevin on the screen, strapped to a bed at Summerholt.

Kevin : [Fearfully.] You don't have to do this! I won't tell anyone, I promise! I won't tell them what happened. I know it was an accident. I know you didn't mean to.

Clark : Kevin didn't kill his brother.

Lois : Whoever erased Kevin's memories must've planted some new ones.

Clark : How could someone do that? Let Kevin walk around thinking he killed his own brother.

Lois : Someone who obviously can't live with themselves.

Clark : I need to find Kevin.

Lois : And where are you gonna find him?

Clark : Where his brother died seems like a pretty good place to start.

Lois : Wait a minute.

Lois leans over to get something and Clark super speeds out of the room.

Lois : Didn't his dad say that the accident happened at... [She realizes that Clark is gone.] ...Audrey Clearing? [She looks around.] Clark?

Act 3 Scene 5

Kevin walks through the woods at Audrey Clearing. Day. He flashes back to the day of the accident for a moment. He, his brother Dylan, and his dad are on a hunting trip. They are all wearing flannel jackets and walking through the woods holding rifles. He has another flashback of hearing a gunshot and Dylan falls to the ground. In the present, Kevin looks around the clearing as if trying to remember more. Clark walks up behind him.

Clark : Kevin.

Kevin turns around and holds out his hand, about to blast Clark again.

Clark : [Holding up his hands.] No, it's okay. Listen, I came here to talk to you about Summerholt.

Kevin : [Lowers his hand.] You're the guy from the Talon. How do you remember me?

Clark : I don't. Whatever you did to me erased all my memories.

Kevin : All of them? Everyone else, it just wiped out the last few minutes.

Clark : I guess I'm not like everyone else. Look, Kevin, I know it's gonna be hard, but I need to talk to you about the accident. Is this where it happened?

Kevin : Somewhere here. [Becoming frustrated.] I know it was somewhere here.

Clark : Just tell me what happened that day.

Kevin flashes back again to loading his rifle. He trips over a tree root and accidentally shoots Dylan. Back to the present.

Clark : Do you have any real memories from that day?

Kevin has another flash of himself tripping over the tree root. Then he sees someone's finger pulling a trigger, shooting Dylan who falls to the ground with blood splattered on his face as Kevin watches in horror. In the present, Kevin breathes heavily, afraid.

Clark : Kevin, what is it?

Kevin : [He shakes his head.] I'm not sure. I've been trying to block the memories out.

Clark : Or maybe someone has already blocked them out for you.

Kevin has a flash of Dylan getting shot and falling to the ground.

Kevin : No. No, I was loading my gun. It was right here.

Clark : But do you actually remember that? Do you remember loading your gun, or do you remember someone telling you that?

Kevin falls to his knees, and flashes back to the day of the accident. In the flashback he falls to his knees. Then he has a flash of Dylan getting shot. Kevin is kneeling over him and then turns around to see that Mr. Grady is holding the smoking rifle. Back to the present. Kevin is still on his knees, and he turns back to Clark.

Kevin : I didn't do it.

Clark kneels down next to him. Kevin starts to cry.

Kevin : It was my dad. How could he do that to me?

Clark : I'm sorry, Kevin.

Kevin : I don't get it. I robbed the Talon and I 86-ed your memory. I mean, why would you go through all this trouble for me?

Clark : I guess I just know what it's like to lose a part of your life.

Kevin : I'm sorry there's nothing I can do for you. I mean, our only chance is to break into Summerholt, but there's no way I can get you in there.

Clark : Maybe I can.

Kevin looks at Clark questioningly.

Fade to black.

Act 4 Scene 1

Sheriff Adams walks to the front desk at Summerholt Institute as Lois speaks to the woman working at the desk. Day.

Lois : Look, this guy's kid robbed me, then plucked the last forget-me-not petal from my friend's brain. You will let me back there and you can do it with or without handcuffs.

Woman : Like I said, if you would sign in, I'll let someone know that you're here.

Lois : What part of this isn't getting through to you? The last time I spoke to my cousin, she was here. And I'm sure the psycho is holding her back there somewhere.

Adams : [Stopping Lois.] Ms. Lane. [To the woman at the desk.] Maybe they pay you enough to be rude, but I doubt they pay you enough to do time in the county jail.

The woman looks from Sheriff Adams to Lois who smiles at her smugly.

Cut to Clark pulling open a door in the roof of Summerholt. Kevin is with him.

Kevin : Wait, wasn't it locked?

Clark : I think it was broken.

Kevin climbs into the building and down the ladder inside. Clark comes down after him. They go down another flight of stairs and into a storage area.

Kevin : We should be able to reach the main office from here.

Somewhere in the room there is kryptonite, and Clark is weakened by it. He stumbles against the wall. Kevin turns back.

Kevin : Clark. Clark, are you okay?

Clark : You go ahead. I'll catch up.

Kevin leaves the room. Clark turns to a nearby shelf and sees several containers of liquid kryptonite. He falls down.

Cut to a lab in Summerholt where Chloe is strapped to the same table that Kevin was strapped to in the video. Mr. Grady walks over to her wearing a lab coat.

Grady : I wish I could erase your memories from just the last three days, but I'm afraid I can't take that chance. I'm gonna have to go back much further than that.

Chloe : Mr. Grady, please don't do that.

Grady : Think of it as a gift. Do you realize how many experiences in life would be so much less painful if we didn't have the memories to haunt us?

Mr. Grady goes to his computer station as Chloe watches him fearfully. He types on the keyboard and lights in the room start to flash as the equipment warms up. Kevin enters.

Kevin : Dad! Were you just going to lie to me my whole life? Huh? [He grabs his father by the jacket.] To make me think I killed my own brother.

Grady : Kevin, calm down. You're obviously having a psychological reaction to your treatment. [He pushes Kevin away.] No one regrets what happened more than I do.

Kevin lunges at Mr. Grady angrily, but Mr. Grady steps out of the way and Kevin falls down knocking over a cart of supplies.

Cut to Clark lying on the floor of the storage room, unable to get up. He looks up and sees a chain hanging from the ceiling with a large hook at the end of it. The chain is fastened there by a rope. Clark reaches to the wall next to him where the rope is tethered and yanks it free. The chain comes swinging down and the heavy hook at the end knocks over the shelf holding the kryptonite containers, taking the kryptonite far enough away that Clark can get up and leave the room.

Cut to the lab. Mr. Grady has resumed what he was doing at the computers and the equipment is getting louder as it prepares to erase Chloe's memory. A green light begins to shine on Chloe's face and she convulses on the table. Then a green bolt of energy shoots down at her from a projector high above the table. But before it hits her, Clark super speeds into the room and stands above her, covering her face with is body. The energy hits him and he has an intense flash of memories just like he had in the alley at the Talon, but now the memories move forward in time as he gains them all back.

As the energy hits Clark in the back, it bounces off of him in two directions and hits the two steel pillars that stand at either side of the table. The enormous pillars fall toward him, and he catches them both, one with each hand.

Lois and Sheriff Adams have entered the room and watch in shock. Chloe looks up and sees what is happening, too. Kevin regains consciousness and sees Clark holding the pillars.

Lois : Wow.

Adams : Dear God in heaven.

Clark looks over, realizing that he is being watched. He pushes the pillars away, sending them both in opposite directions.

Clark : [Nervous.] Lois. Sheriff.

Lois : I guess I shouldn't call you Smallville anymore.

Kevin blasts Lois and Sheriff Adams with his energy, then he points it at Chloe. He and Clark make eye contact, and he nods at Clark. Then he leaves.

When Lois speaks to Clark, her tone is impatient. She has forgotten what just happened.

Lois : Clark, what are you doing? Are you just gonna stand there all day, or are you gonna untie her?

Lois walks over to the table and helps Clark untie Chloe.

Chloe : Hi. Thanks.

Clark looks back at where Kevin left the room, confused.

Act 4 Scene 2

Outside shot of Summerholt. Day. Inside, Mr. Grady is in handcuffs and being led away by an officer. Sheriff Adams is writing on her notepad as she speaks to Lois and Chloe.

Adams : How'd you come across those tapes, Miss Sullivan?

Chloe : Well, I was...

Chloe continues to explain as we move to Clark who is finishing his questioning with another officer.

Officer : Thanks.

The officer walks away and Clark turns around. He sees Kevin sneaking into the hallway. Kevin glances at Clark, then turns and walks away. Clark follows him.

Clark : Hey. You're that kid from the alley. [Kevin nods.] I tried to pull you out of your car, and that's the last thing I remember before what just happened in the lab.

Kevin : Yeah, I'm sorry about that again, Clark. That was kind of my fault.

Clark : I don't know what you did back there or why, but I get the feeling I owe you one.

Kevin : I like to see it as more of a "now we're even" situation.

Clark nods.

Clark : Something tells me I shouldn't stop you from leaving.

Kevin : [Agreeing.] It's better if you don't ask too many questions about me. [He smiles.] Thanks for the chance at a clean slate, Clark.

They shake hands and Kevin leaves.

Fade to black.

Act 5 Scene 1

Outside shot of the barn on the Kent farm. Day. Lex comes out of the barn and sees Clark walking toward him.

Lex : Clark. I was just looking for you. Congratulations. I heard you got full retrieval.

Clark : Everything. Everything except the last 24 hours.

Lex : Well, you didn't miss much, but I wanted to come in person to see the old Clark back.

Lex starts walking back to his car and Clark stops him.

Clark : Lex. Chloe said she left me at the mansion because you wanted to talk. What is it you wanted to talk about?

Lex : I just told you about my own memory loss. I thought it might be comforting.

Clark : I'm lucky to have so many good friends watching out for me.

Lex : Nothing you wouldn't have done for me, Clark.

Lex gets into his car and drives away. Clark looks slightly worried.

Act 5 Scene 2

Lex sits down in front of the fireplace in his study. Night. He unfolds a piece of paper and sets it down on the coffee table. It is a copy of the map that Clark drew of the caves. He studies it.

Act 5 Scene 3

Lana walks up the stairs of Clark's house. Night. He comes out the front door and meets her.

Lana : Hi, I'm early, I know. I'm sorry. I guess I'm just a little nervous.

Clark : [He smiles, not understanding.] What are you nervous about?

Clark sees the look in Lana's eyes and becomes serious.

Clark : Were we supposed to do something? Lana, I'm sorry. I don't remember anything from the last day.

Lana : Oh. But everything else you remember now.

Clark nods.

Lana : It's probably for the best.

Lana smiles, but she seems disappointed.

Clark : Were our plans like date kind of plans? [Lana lowers her eyes.] Because what about Jason?

Lana : Clark, you just wanted to talk. It's nothing that can't wait until later.

Lana starts to leave.

Clark : Lana, wait. [She stops.] I can't do this. I can't let you walk out. Not again.

Lana : It's okay. We both know better than this.

Clark : I know. That's why this time it'll be different.

Lana looks into Clark's eyes for a long moment, trying to understand.

Lana : This time?

Clark smiles at her, hopefully. She smiles slightly in return.

Act 5 Scene 3

Outside shot of Smallville High. Day. Chloe is typing in the Torch office. She is working on an article called, "Summerholt Memory Lane Shut Down," with a picture of Mr. Grady. Clark enters the office and Chloe looks at him.

Clark : Are you Chloe?

Chloe looks at Clark seriously, then he smiles.

Chloe : That's funny. It's not hilarious, but it's funny.

Clark : My parents told me that you Clark-sat and you called them home from Metropolis. I wanted to say thanks.

Chloe stands up.

Chloe : Well, you could still use some help with your comedy routine, but it's not like I taught you to eat solid foods again.

Clark : Still.

Chloe : You're welcome.

Clark : So it must've been kind of strange to have a zombie best friend walking around.

Chloe : Yeah, I mean, you know, I never really realized how complicated that zombie's life was.

Clark : [Apprehensive.] Complicated? Did I do something unusual?

Chloe : You had a clean slate to start all over with, and you made all the same choices... except for one.
