Plus de détails

Granville, Kansas
Christmas Eve

Lex pulls up in a dark alleyway and exits his car. He enters a door and finds Griff stting in a tunnel.

Griff : Ho, ho, ho, Lex.

Lex : Is there any reason we couldn't have met at the  mansion?

Griff : I don't make house calls. If you wanna utilize my skills, you come to me. That is if you really wanna bring down Jonathan Kent.

Lex : Then, I'm assuming you have some sort of grenade to launch at him.

Griff : Not yet, but I will. I'll either find it or operate it. It's the pitfall of being in the public eye. So, what's printed about a man is gospel. It doesn't matter if it's fact or not.

Lex : Give me twenty-four hours.

Griff : Your old man wouldn't hesitate.

Lex : Before I go down the path you are proposing, I wanna consider all my options.

Griff : What's the matter, Lex? Holiday spirit got you all sentimental.

Lex : If my father gets wind that we've met, you're not going to make it to Christmas, Griff.

Lex walks back out to his car and two muggers show up; a guy and girl.

Guy : Well, well, looks like Santa Claus came to town after all.

Lex : I'm not looking for trouble.

Guy : C'mon, man! I ain't playing. Give me your keys!

Lex : Take it easy, take it easy.

Guy : Give me your keys now! And the watch!

As Lex is taking off his watch, the girl shoots him twice. Lex falls to the ground and instantly waks up in the bright morning, in a strange bed. He looks around and sees Lana sleeping next to him.

Lex [whispering] : Lana.

At that, a young boy, Alex, runs into the room and jumps onto the bed.

Alex : Breakfast!

Lex : Whoa! Who are you?

Lana : Honey, you did promise him.

Alex : Come on!

Lex : Whoa! I don't remember. What happened?

Lana silences him with a kiss.

Alex : Come on, Dad! Let's go!

Lana : Pancakes. You promised Alex pancakes, and then you were going to go shopping for a tree.

Lex studders, confused.

Lana : No, don't. Don't complain to me. You're the one who always waits 'til Christmas Eve to get it.

Alex : Dad, let's go! Come on, Dad!

Lana gets out of bed and Lex notices there is something different about her.

Lex : Honey, you're pre---

Lana takes Alex's hand.

Lana : Alex, come on, honey. Let's get you dressed.

Alex and Lana walk out of the room.

Alex : Dad and me are gonna get the best tree ever!

Lana [correcting him] : Dad and I...

Lex gets up and lifts his shirt, revealing two scars: one from a surgery and next to it, one from a bullet.

Lex : What happened? Where am I?

He walks into the bathroom and opens the medicene cabinet. When he shuts it, he's suprised to see a red-haired woman in the mirror.

Lex : Mom? But, you're---am I dead?

Lillian : No, Lex. You're still very much alive.

Lex : Then, how...I'm dreaming.

He splashes water on his face.

Lillian : It's not a dream, Lex. This is your life.

Lex : Then, I don't understand. This can't be. It isn't real.

Lillian : It is real, Lex. As real as you want it to be. All of this can be your's if you make the right choices.

Lex : All of this? What do you mean? What are you talking about?

He turns around to find his mother is gone.

Cut to the present day. Lex is lying in the alleyway, unconcious.

[Opening Credits]

At the Kent home, Martha is baking in the kitchen. She takes the cookies out of the oven and Jonathan attempts to take one, burning himself.

Jonathan : Ow!

Martha : Serves you right. These are for the party. Besides, we have enough politicians with their hands in the cookie jar.

Jonathan : Martha, look, I know you're not sold on the idea of me running for state senate---

Martha : Not sold would be an understatement.

Jonathan : But, it is Christmas Eve, see? Can we please not talk about that? Please, please...

They kiss and he reaches around her, grabbing a cookie.

Martha : Hey, hey, hey, you cheater!

Jonathan : I just want one.

Cut to Lana putting the angel on top of the Kent's Christmas tree.

Lana : There. She's perfect.

Clark : Yes, she is.

They kiss.

Lana : It's usually just me and Nell at Christmas, with lots of tensil and an artificial tree. Thank you, Clark. Thank you for saving me from another plastic store-bought holiday.

Clark : You're welcome.

They move in to kiss, but Clark's phone rings, interrupting them. The ringtone is "Jingle Bells".

Lana : Tell her Merry Christmas for me.

She walks off.

Clark : Hi, Chloe.

Chloe : Clark, I've got a problem. Meet me at the Planet. I need your help.

Cut to Smallville Medical center. Lex is being wheeled in in a stretcher.

Emt : Multiple gunshot wound. Shoulder, mid-abdomen, no apparent exit wound.

Doctor : Mr. Luthor, can you hear me? Mr. Luthor, squeeze my hand if you can hear me.

The doctor shines a light in his eye.

Cut to the future. Lex and Lana's house. Day.

Lana : Alexander! Hey, hey! Wait for your father.

Lex comes out of the house carrying a car seat.

Lana : Try to be back by six so we can make it to the Kent's party.

Lex : The Kents?

Lana : And this year, try and remember that we're on a budget.

Lex : What? We have a buget?

Lana : Lex, it's been seven years since your father cut up your platinum card. I think it's about time to embrace the middle class lifestyle.

Alex : Daddy! Daddy! Let's go!

Lex : Seven years? Seven years...I don't...

He inexpertly shoves the car seat into the back of the car.

Lana : Okay. Here, you know what? Let me do that. One of these days, you're going to figure out how to do this and hopefully it's before your new little girl arrives. Alex, in ya go.

Alex : Yeah!

Lana : I'm sorry about the whole budget thing. I know that you only over spent because you want the best for us. It's part of why I love you so much.

She kisses him.

Alex waves at Lex and Lex waves back. He then gets in and adjusts the seat, which is too close to the wheel. Alex burps, then laughs.

Cut to the Christmas tree lot. Lex and Alex are looking up at a nice, large tree.

Alex : Wow.

Lex : Wow is right. Lana said---your mom said---Clark!

He sees Clark and Chloe and runs to them.

Lex : Hey! You have no idea how happy I am to see the two of you.

Chloe : Are you a father again?

Lex : Ah, no. Not yet. I was just---

Alex comes running toward them.

Alex : Uncle Clark! Uncle Clark! Make me fly!

Clark : Hey!

He picks Alex up and they play that Alex is flying.

Clark : I missed you! I'm sorry I haven't been around lately. Things have been crazy at the Planet.

Chloe, to Lex: Yeah, don't let his "things have been crazy" line fool you. He's been promoted.

Clark : Yeah! Now I'm a full-fledged reporter.

Chloe : I've got some pretty big news too.

Lex : Okay.

Chloe : My book's being published in January.

Lex : Wow, that's great.

Chloe : Yeah, they loved the idea of a Luthor Corp. exposé, complete with an anonymous tell-all source. Thank you. So much. (She hugs him and whipsers in his ear.) I couldn't have done it without you, Lex.

Clark : Alright, Miss. Did-I-Mention-That-My-Book-Is-About-To-Be-Published. Let's get your tree and get outta here.

Clark : Bye, Alex.

Chloe : Bye, Alex. Bye, Lex.

Clark : See ya, Lex. See you tonight.

Lex : Yeah. See you.

Alex : Dad! (He points to a fine looking tree.) This one's awesome!

Cut to the present day. Lex is lying unconcious in bed. The nurse is injecting something into his I.V. Lionel enters.

Lionel : What happened? What's wrong with my son?

Nurse : Just a minute.

Lionel : Where' the doctor?

Doctor : Mr. Luthor, I'm Dr. Scanlan.

Lionel : What's happening, Doctor?

Doctor : Your son's been shot.

Lionel : Shot?

Doctor : His life is no longer in danger; I'm afriad Lex is going to be paralyzed from the waist down. Your son's internal bleeding created a bloodclot that is pressing on his spinal cord. If we could relieve the pressure, we---

Lionel : If? No, we are going to do it. (He begins dialing numbers on his cell phone.) Doctor, now.

Doctor : Mr. Luthor, Lex hasn't stablized yet. An operation at this stage could kill him.

Lionel : My son is going to walk again, Doctor. (To the person on his cell) Get me Dr. Litvack.

Cut to the Daily Planet.

Chloe : So, then they put me in charge and I've actually got a really great responce. I mean, I have doubled the number of Toys for Tots the Planet collected last year.

Clark : Okay, so what's the problem?

Chloe : Well, the presents need to be delivered tonight and the teamsters are on strike---on Christmas Eve.

Clark : So, instead of Fedex, you called me?

Chloe : I do realize it's a lot to ask, but I mean, you do run faster than a speeding bullet and I know you don't want to dissappoint all of those underprivelaged children.

Clark : You didn't have to go there.

Chloe : Well, you know, it's true. I mean, you'd be helping out a really great cause. Not to mention, saving my career.

Clark : It's just that I promised Lana I would---

Chloe : Yeah, I'm sure she'll understand or, at least, she'll understand whatever you tell her. Please.

Clark : Alright.

Chloe : Yay!

Clark : I'll deliver a few on my way to the party.

Chloe : You're my hero! I knew you'd come through. Okay.

She opens up the doors to the basement to reveal thousands upon thousands of toys.

Clark : Chloe, this isn't Toys for Tots, it's Toys R Us. How many are there?

Chloe : A couple of thousand, give or take. Now, I Map Quested these addresses. The sooner you get started, the better. (She puts a Santa hat on him.) Here comes Santa Claus!

She takes a picture of him and laughs.

Cut to Clark delivering presents. We see a bird's eye view of the streets of Metropolis. Clark is zooming from building to building. At one house, a little girl discovers him putting presents under the tree.

Girl : You're not Santa Claus.

Clark : Yes, I am. (He puts the Santa hat back on.) I'm the new and improved model.

Girl : Liar. You can't be Santa; he is!

She points out the window to a Santa on a nearby roof. He is drinking and dangerously close to the edge.

Clark superspeeds up to where Santa is.

Clark : Are you alright? You're a little close to the edge, aren't you?

Santa : Makes it easier to jump.

He looks at Clark, who takes off his Santa hat.

Clark : Yeah, I guess it does, doesn't it? Mind if I sit?

Santa : Sit free, whatever. You want a drink?

Clark : No, thanks. Why don't you have a seat? You can always jump later.

Santa : Yeah, I guess you're right. After all, it's not like I have somewhere to be.

Clark : Listen, I dont' wanna be nosy, but I was just wondering, Santa, what're you doing up here? I mean, why are you going to jump?

Santa : Give me one good reason why I shouldn't. You can't, can you? You got a good look at the world lately? It's all take, take, take and bitch, bitch, bitch. What happened to Christmas? Peace on Earth, goodwill to men? I'll tell you something: the spirit of Christmas is dead! and it's going to take a lot more than Santa Claus to revive it.

Cut to Smallville medical Centeer. Night. The Doctor and nurse are in Lex's room.

Doctor : Increase his liquids and give him eight miligrams of Decadron.

Lionel enters.

Lionel : The only thing you have to give my son, Dr. Scanlan, is whatever is medically necessary to have him moved.

He hands the doctor the papers.

Lionel : I am having Lex air-lifted to the Davis Clinic in Metropolis for immediate surgery. There neurosurgeon is standing by.

Doctor : Mr. Luthor, I can't condone this!

Lionel : You don't have to. (To Lex) Listen to me, you are going to walk, son.

Cut to the future. Lex and Alex are driving home with the tree. They pull up in the driveway and Lana comes out to greet them.

Alex : Mommy! Come see! It's a beauty, isn't it, Dad?

Lana looks at Lex.

Lex : I know what you're thinking.

Lana : That you've given into your son again? That you're spoiling him?

Lex : Exactly, and I can certainly understand how you reached that conclusion. The thing is: this tree is for me. Lana, I don't know if I've ever told you this, but after my mom died, my father didn't allow Christmas to be celebrated in our house. It was a very bleak, very lonley time for me, and when I saw this tree, I knew it was exactly like the ones I dreamed about all the years I couldn't have one. Some how, it represented all the Christmases I'd missed. Can you understand that?

Lana : Of course I can, honey; it's the same thing you tell me every year.

They hug.

Cut to Lana opening the doors for the guys.

Lana : Alright, let me get something to put on the floor before needles get everywhere.

Lex and Alex are dragging the tree inside.

Lex : Come on, muscles! Do I have to do this all by myself?

He walks to the livingroom and picks up a gift.

Lex : Hey, what's this?

Lana : Your father's secretary never does forget us.

Lex : Nah, this is a corperate gift. Not something from my father. I don't understand.

Lana : Lex, you know Christmas is just another opertunity for your father to ignore you. It's his way of showing you just how disappointed he is for you turning your back on what he thinks it means to be a Luthor, but as far as I'm concerned, getting shot was the best thing that ever happened to you. Coming that close to dying made you realize the things in your life that are important; made you the man you are today. The man that I married.

They kiss.

Cut to Lex being pushed in on stretchers in the hospital.

Cut to the rooftop where Clark is talking Santa.

Santa : Now, let me get this straight. You gave up your first Christmas with the girl you loved since you spied on her with your telescope to deliver these gifts?

Clark : Yeah, well, I mean, I wasn't spying. Look, I wasn't the only one. My friend Chloe---she gave up her plans too. I mean, someone had to do it, otherwise those kids wouldn't have gotten their presents. They're the ones who really need them.

Santa : So, the two of you decided to play Santa Claus? I guess I was wrong. The spirit of Christmas isn't dead after all.

He stands up.

Clark : You sure you're alright?

Santa : I am now. (He looses his balance and falls off the roof.) Whoa!

Clark superspeeds down the side of the building and catches him and his bottle of liqour.

Santa takes the bottle and walks down the street.

Santa : Ho, ho, holy cow!!

Clark : Merry Christmas.

In the surgery, the doctor is giving orders about what they will be doing.

Doctor : We'll begin by collapsing the left lung, followed by a left-sided throracodomy. Merry Christmas, everyone. Now, cue the carols. I'm about to perform a miracle.

Cut to the future. Clark opens the front door.

Clark : The party can officially begin. The Luthors are here. Merry Christmas, Lana.

They hug.

Lana : Merry Christmas, Clark.

Clark : Lex, Merry Christmas.

They hug.

Lex : Merry Christmas.

Lex and Lana walk into the livingroom. Jonathan walks up to them.

Jonathan : Lex, just the man I was looking for. Lana, you look beautiful.

He kisses her cheek.

Lana : Thank you.

Jonathan : And just about due, I might add.

Lana : Only a few more weeks now, Senator.

Chloe : Hi, Lex.

Lex : Hi.

Chloe : Merry Christmas.

They kiss.

Martha : Merry Christmas, Lana.

Lana : Thank you.

Martha : Lex, honey.

She kisses him.

Chloe : Come on, Lana! Let's go get some punch!

Jonathan, to Lex : Hey, come here. [He pulls Lex off to the side] Look, I probably shouldn't be showing you this, but being state senator does have it's advantages, like an advanced notice from the governor.

He opens a silver box which contains a plaque reading: The Kansas Humanitarian Award.

Jonathan : Lex, I never actually thought I would say this, but I couldn't be more proud of you if you were my own son.

Lex : Mr. Kent--Jonathan, I don't know what to say.

Jonathan : Let's tell everybody, shall we? Come on. (To the room at large he says) Everybody, grab a drink. Come on! Grab a glass, listen up here. (He takes some champagne from the waiter) Thank you. Now, uh, Ladies and gentlemen, I have it on very good authority that this year's Kansas humanitarian award is going to be given to our very own Lex Luthor. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Lex Luthor---the finest man I know.

The growd claps.

Crowd : Cheers!

Cut to the porch were Lex is standing, talking to Lillian.

Lex : I can't remember ever being this happy. This has been the best day of my life. Thank you.

Lillian : It doesn't have to end, Lex. Every day could be this wonderful. I told you, this is the life you could have, the life you can have, Lex.

Lex : This is what I want. What do I have to do?

Lillian : You just have to make the right decision, Lex. Follow your heart, not your ambitions.

Lex : What decision? What are you talking about?

Clark : Lex, who are you talking to?

Lex : No one, or possibly myself. I really don't know anymore. I guess I'm just sorta contemplating this evening.

Clark : Yeah, well, holidays will do that to you.

Lex : You know, my life hasn't turned out at all the way I planned and yet, I've never been happier.

Clark : Lex, you have a wonderful life and every reason to be happy: a beautiful wife, a great son, and a baby on the way.

Lex : Something I still can't quite believe: me and Lana. Now, how the hell did that happen?

Clark : I dunno. You became the kind of man she could love.

Lex : You mean the kind of man you've always been.

Clark : And Lex, you offered her something I didn't.

Lex : What held you back, Clark? I mean, I know you love her--loved her.

Clark : I don't know. I guess I just wasn't ready, Lex. Maybe I never will be, but I am glad that you and Lana ended up together and we've been able to remain such good friends.

Lex : Thank you.

Martha runs up.

Martha : Lex, come quickly. It's Lana.

Cut to the present day in Lex's O.R.

Doctor : Suction.

Nurse : Suction.

Doctor : Yeah, I need more suction and give me more exposure.

Nurse : Right away. 02675, he's in defib.

Doctor : We're losing him.

Nurse : I'll get a cart.

Doctor : Come on, people. Get it together!

Cut to the future. Lex and Lana's daugther is born. Lex, Lana, and the baby are in the delivery room.

Lex, to Lana : You did it. You were great.

Nurse : Merry Christmas. You're the parents of a beautiful baby girl.

She hands the baby to Lex.

Lex : She's perfect. What an amazing Christmas gift, Lana. Thank you.

He places the baby in Lana's arms.

Lana : Well, you did a little bit. (To the baby) Hi, hi little girl. You're so beautiful.

Lex and Lana share a smile.

Lex : Wow.

The expression on Lana's face changes and she starts gasping.

Lex : Lana. Honey, are you okay? Nurse!

Nurse : Homorrhaging. We need to start transfusing.

She takes the baby from Lana.

Lex : What's happening? What's wrong?

Nurse : Somebody get him out of here.

Lex : Lana!

He is shut out of the room.

Nurse : Start an I.V. push. Let's get her into the O.R. now!

Later, Lex is pacing out in the hallway. The nurse enters.

Nurse : Mr. Luthor.

Lex : How is she?

Nurse : I'm sorry, but your wife as lost a lot of blood. We're trying to control it, but---

Lex : There's gotta be something you can do.

Cut to the Luthor mansion. Lionel is sitting at the desk in the study. Lex enters.

Lex : Dad, I need your help.

Lionel : I don't doubt it. Why else would you be here Christmas Eve?

Lex : It's Lana, Dad. They started transfusions, but we need to get her to a specialist. There's a surgeon in Metropolis at the Davis Clinic.

Lionel : Oh, Lex. What a sorry situation you've gotten yourself into.

Lex : I don't think you understand. My wife is dying and I need the helojet to save her.

Lionel : I understand you perfectly. You turned your back on me seven years ago and now you need my help, so now you have no problem banging on my door, begging for favors in the name of family.

Lex : We're talking about Lana! I know we've had our differences, but in my wife---she's the mother of your grandchildren.

Lionel : How can I have grandchildren? I don't have a son.

Lex : You ba---you can save her!

Lionel : No, Lex. I'm not gonna do that. Don't you understand that every decision you've made as brought you to this moment? Begining that day seven years ago in the hospital when you decided to forfeit the state senate race to Jonathan Kent. I told you this would happen. I warned you, but you chose to give up your family, and when you made that decision, you gave up the money and power that would have enabled you to save your wife. Pathetic. You said that you didn't want to be a Luthor, that you wanted instead to be free, to live happily ever after. Go on, then, Lex. You better get back to her.

Cut to Lana's hospital room. Lex takes her hand and sits by her side.

Lex : Lana. Please, don't give up. Don't leave me.

Lana : Lex.

Lex : Hey.

He touches her cheek and she touches his.

Lana : You have to be strong, Lex. For Alexander, for Lily.

Lex : Lana, I love you. Maybe I tell you that all the time--I don't know--but, please listen to me. I mean it. I love you. I have always loved you.

Lana : I love you too, Lex Luthor. You're a good man. Don't ever change.

We see her hand slide down from his shoulder. Lex begins to cry. We see a hand on Lex's shoulder. He turns around.

Lex : What did you do to her? Why didn't you stop this? I thought you were showing me a better life!

Lillian : I was, Lex. I am.

Lex : A life where my wife dies? A life full of pain?!

Lillian : No, Lex---a life full of love.

Lex : Love? Everyone I have ever loved has died. First Julian, then you, and now Lana is dead and I couldn't do anything to stop it!

Cut to the present day. Lex sits up in his hospital bed, gasping.

Lionel : Lex! Son!

Lex : Lana!

Lionel : I'm here. You're in Metropolis, Lex, at the Davis Clinic. You've been shot, but you're gonna be alirght.

At the Daily Planet, Chloe is typing on her computer.

Santa : Merry Christmas, Chloe.

Chloe : Santa?

Santa : Suit gave me awway, huh?

Chloe : What do you want?

Santa : I met a friend of your's, young Clark Kent. He told me what you two were doing, how you were giving up yoru respective Christmas Eves. I figured you could use a little help.

Chloe : Shouldn't you be, you know, standing on a street corner with a bell?

Santa : Come on, let me give you two a hand, take a little of the pressure off. I'm familiar with the job, you know.

Chloe : I don't know.

Santa : Give me a chance. Worst case scenario, I make off with a few free squirt guns.

Chloe : Well, we could definitely use all the help we can get, and no one can accuse you of being a scab in a Santa outfit. (She walks over to the desk.) Alright, um, I organized the addresses from east west, so if you just---

She turns around to find Santa and all of the toys gone.

Cut to Lex's hospital room. Lex is lying in bed. Lionel enters.

Lionel : Lex, you wanted to talk to me? Whatever it is, son, it can wait 'til you are stronger.

Lex : You're right. I should probably be resting. After all, I did just undergo a life-threatening operation. Dr. Litvack told me the odds of survival I had going into surgery. Pretty wreckless roll of the dice, don't you think?

Lionel : On the contrary, son. What I did may appear callus, but opting for my son to have surgery was a deliberate decision.

Lex : But, it wasn't your decision to make, was it? You went against the doctor's advice. Not because you wanted to save me, but because you couldn't bear having a cripple for a son.

Lionel : You may hate me for taking the risk, but I had to make a choice and you're alive and you can walk. I had to give you that chance.

Lex : And what if I hadn't made it? How would you have justified your decision then? How dare you play God with my life?

Cut to the Kent farm. The dog is eating some cookies off the tray and Jonathan stops him.

Jonathan : Hey, hey, no!  Come on. Come one. Outside.

Martha and Lana are serving snacks to people and Clark and Chloe are off on the edge of the room, chatting.

Chloe : So, then I turned back around and your tubby little miscreant was gone, along with all the toys.

Clark : Yeah right. The same guy? The drunk Santa? The guy who I just talked off of the roof of a building?

Chloe : Yes, honestly, Clark. I mean, I'm sure that I was tired enough to imagine Santa, but there is no way I could've dreamed away all of those whiffle balls and Gameboys. Maybe he really is...

Clark : Yeah right.

Chloe : Come on, Clark. There's a chance.

Martha : Look, everybody! It's snowing! Oh, we're going to have a white Christmas after all!

Everyone goes outside to look at the snow.

Chloe : Oh my God.

Clark : Merry Christmas, Lana.

Lana : Merry first Christmas together, Clark. The first of many.

Cut to Lex's hospital room. He is looking out the window at the snow.

Lex : I thought you didn't make house calls.

Griff : Giving the circumstances, I made an exception.

Lex : Ah, not to worry, Griff. We Luthors are made of pretty tough and definitely expensive material.

Griff : Are you sure your morphine drip isn't turned up too high?

Lex : Well, it's not everyday one has a near death experience. And it's true, much like Ebenezer Scrooge, I realized that what I want more than anything is to live happily ever after, and do you know what the secret to happiness is? Power, money, and power. See, once you have those two things, you can secure everything else and keep it that way.

Griff : So, what am I doing here, Lex?

Lex : I want you to pull the pin on that grenade. Find it, fake it, do whatever it takes to knock Jonathan Kent out of the race. I wanna be Senator. I want it all.

Griff : Consider it done. Merry Christmas.

Lex is looking out the window in which we see a reflection of a sad-looking Lillian.
